Walkin, Walkin, Walkin Away!

The Good Doctor knows at least a dozen highly qualified, effective LANL employees who have left the laboratory during Nanos' reign of terror, at the Bechtel selloff and then Bechtel's redoubled reign of terror. We know a similar number who could/would/should have left but have no plan to leave until they are fired.

How many do YOU know?

Doc

Hey, Doc.

I'm a proud graduate of the 'Class of 2005'. 15 members of my group left within 12 months of Nanos' shutdown, so I'm sure the total number of staff who have left as a direct result of that event is much higher. It would be interesting to have access to the attrition numbers of all who have left LANL since July, 2004.

Absolutely!

We will elaborate my post to make it clear that this is an estimate of the number we know personally.

We hope the testimonials roll in...

The good Doctor would like the public (if not LANS/DOE/Congress) to appreciate what a huge bleedout we have and will continue to suffer.

There are plenty of good people left at LANL, but the point (as Doug well knows!) is that the best ones with the best options are the most likely to go under this kind of treatment while the least effective with the least options are the ones most likely to stay around as they boil us down.

In the gourmet cooking world, this is called "a reduction", in DOE/LANS management it is called a "reduction in force" or "RIF"... but in this case, the process will eventually leave nothing but a concentrated residue of incompetence.

Unfortunately, Doc, the testimonials will not roll in if commenters are required to have a blog identity.

I know, I know: you can create a blog identity with blogger.com and still retain anonymity, but guess what: most LANL staff seem unwilling to do that.

We shall leave the reasons for that reluctance to be the subject of some separate discussion.

One option that I'm sure you know you have to make the comment forum a bit less intimidating to those who wish to participate is to change the "Who May Comment" setting on Gone Nuclear from "Must have a blogger.com account" to "Anybody may post", and turn on comment moderation. That way you can filter the trash before it is exposed to the readers.

It is of course your blog, and please continue to run it however you wish. I think you're doing a great job!

Shit! I'm heading out of here as soon as I can. I would have left at the contract changeover but needed to break over the 50 mark.

I love the good things about the lab, the town, the area, but it has been going downhill for a long time and working for Bechtel really sucks.

I am so embarrassed by what they do in the world and don't trust them an inch with my career. I'm young enough to start a new career and I have enough current skills as well.

I'm going to miss the area since there isn't a lot to choose from locally, but I won't miss Nanos and Bechtel and all that!

Hasta la Vista Mo'Fo's

Don't you just bet the FBI has their hands full tracking former LANL employees to make sure they don't turn up in Pakistan or North Korea (or Israel for that matter)?

What kind of idiots would run off the nations best and brightest just to lend their corporate buddies another big fat contract?

Is Bechtel competent enough to take advantage of thousands of the worlds top scientists or will they just run them off,or into the ground?

It sounds like the golden goose problem to me.

good riddance

they were all a bunch of whining cowards anyway

why are you afraid of a drug test unless you are a loser addict

people in the real world have to put up with this kind of stuff

i bet you were never in the military or youd quit whining

you have it god and you know it

you are stupid and you are lazy

Re 4:26pm's post

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is an example of the Bechtel culture. Do you like it? Get used to it.

The 4:26 poster is the one who is stupid. The drug tests have nothing to do with security. Drug tests would not have detected any problem with the person accused of removing classified documents--good vetting of security clearances by the DoE would have. The drug test are just one more means of punishing the current employees for management and oversight errors. I would dearly love to leave this mess but my sponsor wants me to finish some tasks that are important to the country first. I just hope that LANS incompetence doesn't prevent that despite my best efforts. Stop calling people who have a great deal to put up with and are trying to do their best for the country, whiners.

Please stay out of the gene pool.

I second the sentiment... stay out of the gene pool, you've been diving into the shallow end too often.

How did you manage to synchronize your post 24 hours to the minute after the first one? That was amazing!

I have lots leave - they are going to DC and Argonne and ORNL. Argonne is actively trying to build up its Chemistry division.

Lots of us are out in the Washington, DC area now.

I understand there is a little anuerism oriented in the direction of ORNL who seem to have some fresh boatloads of cash.

I know a small team who is headed that way... the good news is we are better off w/o them, the bad news is they will do us a lot of damage with our sponsors before ORNL figures out they are damaging them worse (only to move on to yet another DOE lab to repeat the process).

I'm a post doc and there's no way in hell I'm staying (got a job lined-up elsewhere already). The blogs have been quite informative.

At the contract change, my group of 75+ fissioned into three groups. Since that time at least four have left from the various successor groups. Two more will be leaving by the end of the month. All but one are under forty years old and most were card-carrying Ph.D's. But I'm sure that 6 out of 75 in 11 months is just normal attrition. NOT!

I'm a blue-badge PostDoc and I want to stay. Yes, things have been pretty bad and they continue to be stupid in some ways, but I want to see this place survive... it is the best place for me to do my research at least as long as the team I work with who have been here for a long time stick it out.
